Consider the main message, purpose, and advertisement techniques used in Coca-Cola’s commercial “Coming Together” (2013). Is Coca-Cola a reliable source for healthy eating information, why? Assess the messages in the commercial. Refer to other critiques such as the Fooducate blog. How much choice do individuals have about the foods they eat? What should be considered (e.g., age, dietary restrictions, culture, physical activity levels, food accessibility) when comparing personal eating practices to the recommendations in Canada’s Food Guide? Students can create a response to a food/beverage advertisement that represents their understanding of persuasion techniques, accuracy of health information, how the food/beverage supports and/or inhibits their personal needs and commitment to healthy eating.

Assessment Criteria:

  • Analyze opinions and messages presented in multimedia texts
  • Analyze techniques used to influence judgement about what foods are healthy
  • Determine how and where to access healthy eating information
  • Compare personal food consumption with recommendations in Canada’s Food Guide and Food Guide for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis
  • Assess food consumption needs based on level of participation in movement activities
